This year, 2021, eTwinning focuses on two sides of the same coin: Media literacy, on one side, and how to tackle the phenomenon of disinformation and fake news, on the other. It was made clear during 2020, the year of the corona pandemic, that the exposure of citizens to disinformation is a major challenge not only for adults but also for students. The European Commission’s Media Literacy for All Preparatory Action 2020 describes “media literacy” as an umbrella expression that includes all technical, cognitive, social, civic and creative capacities that allow citizens to access the media, to have a critical understanding of them and to interact with them. “Disinformation” is understood as verifiably false or misleading information that is created, presented and disseminated for economic gain or to intentionally deceive the public, and may cause public harm. eTwinning has been promoting Media Literacy since its birth in 2005 by focusing on the integration of digital tools in the everyday life of teachers and students. Special emphasis has been given to digital citizenship, with the aim of fostering students’ awareness and responsibility in using digital tools.
